How Music Festivals affect Fish on Nearby Water

An interdisciplinary group of researchers findings reveal that a stress reaction that is substantial was experienced by nearby fish on March 2019 Florida on Virginia Key.

The researchers’ findings demonstrated the cichlid fish undergone an increase their stress hormone, in blood glucose, throughout their Ultra Music Festival’s night in comparison to two samples.

The study group positioned recording devices to measure intensity Along with testing levels. Hydrophones were put in Lamar Lake, a mangrove lagoon and at Bear Cut Inlet from the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park directly from the tanks and at the waters further north.

“Recordings demonstrated that the noise intensity improved by 7-9 decibels from the cichlid tanks along with 2-3 decibels from the neighboring waters of Bear Cut at the low frequency range from which fish would be the most sensitive to fluctuations in sound pressure,” explained co-investigator Claire Paris, professor of ocean sciences in the UM Rosenstiel School. “Variations from the sonic action of marine organisms and extra noise from ship traffic might have led to the signal found in Bear Cut through Ultra. In situ measurements, for example long term acoustic recording, are essential to assess the impact of Ultra on fish populations.”

Prior studies have proven that”underwater sound pollution causes anxiety and various behavioral and physiological disruptions on hearing, communicating, spawning behaviour and reproduction in aquatic organisms,” explained Maria Cartolano, direct postdoctoral scientist about the research.

This analysis couldn’t determine if the elevated levels are going to have any results on the fish.

“We conducted the research on the impacts of the multi-day music concert because of the close proximity of this festival into our experimental hatchery and aquaculture centre,” stated co-investigator Martin Grosell, professor of marine biology and ecology and Maytag Chair of Ichthyology in the UM Rosenstiel School. “It provided an chance to inquire into the possible impacts a massive music festival of this type could have fish.”

The music festival, held in Virginia Key Beach Park and the Miami Marine Stadium pulled over 170,000 attendees throughout the event, among the biggest music festivals .
